Lock the Gate Against Mining

Lock Your Gate to Gold Mining

The threat of mining in the Coromandel is here and it is real.

The best recourse right now is for our community to stand together and Lock the Gate against mining. Private landowners can legally refuse mining companies access rights, a process made easier by using a Lock the Gate sign to signal that entry on to your land by a mining company will result in a trespass notice.

If you are a resident or ratepayer get your sign on your gate or fence now.

The Lock the Gate campaign is starting in Kūaotunu to ensure that OceanaGold, and any other mining companies who may follow them, can be clear that we do not want them here.

The campaign takes cues from the success of the Lock the Gate group in Australia, and by injecting some kiwi humour into it we will be sending a clear message to OceanaGold.

Case Study: Kūaotunu still proudly anti-mining

The community of Kūaotunu has long been associated with the fight against multinational gold mining companies. In September 2017 a local survey asked the community if they agreed or disagreed with the following statement:

I agree that KRRA should support KAMAG's call against extractive mineral mining and tailings dams in Kūaotunu and the Coromandel.

 The results were:

94% in favour of the statement

6% against the statement

These results clearly show that the people who live, work, holiday and visit Kūaotunu understand that destructive gold mining poses a threat to all the things we hold dear about this special area.

Dig this, OceanaGold!
