Protecting the Hauraki Coromandel Peninsula for future generations.

Over 60,000 hectares of mineral exploration permits across the Hauraki - largely unknown to local communities and landowners.

The truth about mining

The mining companies will tell you it is a safe and sustainable industry. This isn’t correct.

Gold mining has a long history of making profits for the owners and leaving a toxic liability for communities and countries.

Tailings dams continue to be a source of global contention because of their repeated failures.

Between 2007–2017 there were 50 tailings dam failures across the globe (United Nations MINE Tailings Storage: Safety is No Accident, 2017). Since 2017 at least 34 more have been recorded (WISE 2025).

They are already here!

Mining companies are aggressively expanding their operation at Waihi and have active exploration licences across Hauraki Coromandel.

Exploratory drilling has started Te Rerenga and Whenuakite in February 2025.

Landowners you can prevent them coming onto your land.

Gold price at record levels

The price of gold has reached a near record high and the push for new mines in areas that are well known for precious metal resources like Hauraki Coromandel are expected to get more aggressive.

Lock the Gate on mining

Landowners have a legal right to stop mining companies going onto their land to explore for gold.

The Lock the Gate Campaign encourages local landowners (and occupiers) to literally lock their gates against mining.

We can all help by buying and displaying a Lock the Gate sign to tell them they are not wanted.
